The Do-it-yourself industry is super popular right now. From home improvements to self-improvement projects, there are do it yourself plans for just about anything. This year take advantage of the explosion in this industry and use do it yourself plans to build you child, grandchild, niece or nephew their very own activity tables. When bought in stores these tables can cost you hundreds of dollars, however, if you make it yourself using toy wooden train table plans, you'll only spend about $100 to $150.

What You Will Need

To start with you will need toy wooden train table plans. These plans will provide you with a materials and tool list, instructions for your project and dimensions for your table. You can find these plans online or at local hobby stores.

When you pick up your activity plans you will then need to go to your local home improvement store or lumber yard to pick up your supplies. You will need lumber, screws, sandpaper, kid friendly paint, wood dowels and wood glue. The lumber dimensions will be detailed on your plans. You can get help selecting the tools and supplies that you need from your project by asking a clerk at your lumber yard or home improvement store.

Building Your Toy Train Table

After you have picked up your materials you will want to set up your work area. You will want to organize your materials so they are easy to find when you need them. Next you will want to lay out your lumber and cut out your pieces. To keep the pieces straight in your mind use a pencil to write down what part they are, such as table top, leg or side rail.

Once all of your pieces have been cut you can assemble the pieces using screws, washers, wood dowels and wood glue. As you glue and assemble your pieces, use wood clamps to hold your pieces tightly together until the glue sets. Once assembled allow your table to remained clamped together for about a day.

The next day you can remove the clamps and sand down your table. You will most likely need to work with both electric sanders and hand sanding tools. You can use the electric sander on the large flat surfaces, however, you will need to hand sand the nooks and crannies and rounded surfaces (if there are any) on your table. Once sanded you can either stain the table or prime and paint it. Make sure you use kid friendly/safe paints and finishing products. Allow the table to dry completely for about a day before playing on the table.
