I bought this toy, and the matching Mach 5, for my young sons. Personally, even though I am an old-time Speed Racer fan the toys didn't appeal to me - until the kids opened them and played with them. This Racer X car (the Shooting Star) is really nicely made. It feels good and solid in your hand and has a very neat gimmick where the rear half of the car splits in two a gun/missile launcher (under the engine) pops up and the real slides back together. The Racer X figure is out of scale - and thats part of what makes this such a magically retro toy. Remember all those great car toys you had that had an inexplicably goofy driver permanently attached. You loved it and always wished the driver could come out so you could play with it - well, thats kinda what we have here. A driver that kinda looks goofy - but wonderfully so - when placed in the car. Without the driver, the car is great looking and slick. With the driver the whole toy feels like it could have been made in 1970 - and thats a good thing from my perspective. Highly recommended.
